Sports and Children

August 28th, 2008

Sports can be a great way for children to learn teamwork, self respect, the value of hard work, etc.

I played football and basketball as a child, and it helped me grow up with a better sense of teamwork and respect for myself.

Back Pain In Sports

March 30th, 2008

Back pain is one of the most common conditions around the world and severely affects the lives of millions of people; affecting almost every type of activity, only back pain relief medication seems to help for a while. Pain relief is possible with the medications available but that is all they do and the reason for the pain continues. While there are a host of prescription medications that help with pain relief, many are doing nothing more than masking the symptoms instead of tackling the underlying cause of the pain.

Long term medication of pain killers is something that should be supervised as other problems can occur because of their continued use. It is not difficult to injure your back, especially if you are a manual worker but long term problems can also be the result of poor body posture or from an accident.

However, back pain is usually caused by a lifting accident or from lifting incorrectly and it is normally the lower back that suffers. More recently people are willing to try natural back pain relief treatments to stop their reliance on other types of medication. One of the simplest but also underused remedies is just the act of stretching which can bring relief to tense muscles as well.

On the other hand reflexology is an alternative medical practice. Pressure is applied to the feet to relieve pain in different parts of the body, it works very well in relieving back pain. Often to compensate for our pain, the back muscles over compensate. Reflexology can help provide relief by improving the circulation which in turn relaxes these hard worked muscles.

Acupuncture on the other hand has been used in China since before the birth of Christ and has had considerable success in helping sufferers. It is providing back pain relief even though this is something that has only recently being used in the Western world. Acupuncture works by releasing the ‘chi’ or energy flow that every living thing has. It can become clogged up when sickness is present; using thin needles placed into the body at specific points can free this energy. Many sufferers swear by the use of acupuncture and results from many tests often back this claim. This treatment has indicating the patient does receive pain relief by using this method.

Tai Chi is also another ancient Chinese discipline which is basically a type of exercise similar to yoga except it is slower. The most important aspect of tai chi is that almost anyone can participate as it uses gentle breathing exercises and techniques to help relax the body.

A good preventative form of back pain relief is to actually exercise more regularly. This not only conditions the back but is an excellent preventative measure.

Sports for Kids

March 28th, 2008

I do not know about you but when I was a kid, I played every sport possible.  Not only did we play sports in the backyard or school yard, but we played in youth leagues.  I played in organized youth league soccer from the age of 5 to 14.  I played in youth league basketball from the age of 8 to 14.  I played in youth baseball from the age of 10 to 14.  I even did the summer swimming league from the time I was 5 to 13 years of age.

All of those years of sports taught me valuable life lessons that still are with me today as an adult.  First and foremost it was fun, but you also develop a good work ethic and learn how to work on a team.  Not to mention you learn how to compete.

What better way to teach kids how life works than to have them learn through organized youth sports leagues.  I for one know I am a better person for all of those years of playing sports.

Tiger Woods is the greatest athlete of all time

March 25th, 2008

It is my opinion that Tiger Woods is the greatest athlete of all time.

Not just the greatest “golfer” of all time… I think Tiger Woods is the greatest all around “athlete” encompassing all sports both past and present.

Tiger Woods has dominated his sport and put so much distance between himself and the rest of the professional golfers, that to compare his performance to other sports would be unimaginable…

Imagine if a basketball team won the Championship 8 out of 9 years ?
Imagine if a football team won 5 or 6 straight Super Bowls ?
Imagine if a Baseball team was to win the World Series for 5 or 6 straight times ?

These are not even conceivable… but, Tiger Woods has been accomplishing this in his sport, and is just getting started.

Tiger Woods will soon hold every meaningful record and will set the bar so high that only a superhuman or alien will be able to replicate what Tiger Woods has done and will do…

Kobe Bryant is the 2nd Michael Jordan

March 21st, 2008

Kobe Bryant has finally come into his own this year with the LA Lakers.

He is now the kind of player that makes his other team members better.  He has always been the best 1 on 1 player in the league but now he is the kind of leader that is required to win an NBA championship.

Michael Jordan was a selfish 1 on 1 player for the first few years of his career and then somewhere along the line he figured out how to be a leader.

Kobe is now doing the same thing and it will result in another championship banner being hung up int the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Go Lakers :)
